Building a legacy…Constructing a Future

The Friends organization consists entirely of volunteers and we are grateful for the valuable commitment. Every dollar raised by the Friends goes to benefit our wonderful Library. Your support is critically important to the Library’s ongoing success.

In addition to assisting the Library, donors receive a 10% discount on purchases in the gift shop, BOOKS & BEYOND.

The Friends will be undergoing organizational changes in the coming year.  Volunteers will continue to operate BOOKS & BEYOND, process all donated books and manage frequent on-site book sales.  The library staff will be assuming the administrative and accounting functions for all the volunteer activities.   These are tasks that our volunteers were pleased to pass on to the library staff and this new arrangement is a win-win for everyone.  Starting in the fall of 2017 an annual Friends appeal with a broader community outreach will be instituted. Please watch the KPL electronic newsletter for further information about this future opportunity.

Books & Beyond

Books & Beyond is a Gift Shop managed and staffed entirely by volunteers who are supporters of Friends of the Kirkwood Public Library. We are located on the main level, right inside the entrance, across from the Customer Service Desk. All proceeds from the shop benefit the Kirkwood Public Library.

We carry a wide variety of previously-read, gift-quality books. You’ll find fiction, non-fiction, biography, children’s, middle readers, history, literature, cook books, home and garden, crafts, religion, self-help, business, travel, science, and Missouri/St. Louis, among others.  For Books & Beyond, we strive to choose books of current interest in all categories. All books are bargain priced at 50 to 70% less then retail.

Gifts

A wide variety of gift items are available for readers and people who love books and words. You’ll find everything from tools that are helpful while studying or doing research, to game books that will help keep your mind sharp, to themed journals. Special items are available for youngsters that help promote reading and literacy.  Many items in our gift selection are unavailable anywhere else in the metropolitan area.

Crafts

Unique hand-crafted items range from stunning pieces of jewelry to functional pieces that help keep your purse organized to lovely scarves that accent a special outfit or make an everyday outfit special. A talented group of Friends members provides our craft items with new offerings on a regular basis.

Greeting Cards

Many of our customers tell us they don’t buy their greeting cards anywhere other than Books & Beyond. Our selection includes birthday, anniversary, sympathy, and just-for-fun cards. Stop by to learn why so many people buy their greeting cards only from us.

Book Sale & Donations

Book Donations

Book Donations

The Library accepts donations year-round at its two drop-off spots.  One is inside the Library on the west side of the Customer Service desk.  The other is the bin at the back of the Library.  For large donations, call the Friends at (314) 821 5770, ext. 1023, to arrange a time to bring in the books.

We are looking for books – fiction and nonfiction, hard cover and paperback—that are in good (“resellable”) condition.  We also take CDs and DVDs.   We cannot take encyclopedias, magazines, or VHS tapes.

Book Sales

Friends of Kirkwood Public Library Book Sale

Due to the construction in the Library, book sales will be scheduled for later 2017. Please check back for future sale dates or subscribe to the Friends Email’ List.

The Friends spend a lot of their time sorting through all the Library book donations to coordinate their regular book sales. While the majority of books make it to these sales, there are times when books are found to be “special”. A “special book” is old, rare, a first edition, out of print, or in some way “special.” The Friends currently have a list of about a dozen “special books” for sale. Click here to review the titles. If you are interested in purchasing any of these special offerings, call (314) 821-5770, ext. 1023, and leave a message.
