A New Resource for Families and Caregivers

By Lynne  |  KPL News

The Kirkwood Public Library has recently purchased reading materials specifically designed for people with dementia, Alzheimer’s and other cognitive impairments.  You may not realize that individuals facing these cognitive challenges often still want to read, even as they advance to later stages of the disease. Many of these adults become frustrated with reading because the books are formatted in a way that makes it difficult, which is were Reading2Connect comes in. These specially designed books feature pages with pictures, very large text, and generous spacing to make reading easier. Best of all, these books differ from children’s picture books in that the content of the material is targeted to an adult audience.  Many of the books lend themselves to discussion, as they call to mind long term memories that are easier to access for those with memory loss.

You‘ll find the Reading2Connect collection near the magazines at the Kirkwood Public Library. These books are available to check out and take with you when you visit a friend or loved one. There is also a handout by the books for tips in sharing reading with someone suffering from dementia or Alzheimers. If you are a caregiver or have a family member who would benefit from these materials, please come by and take a look! If you have any questions or comments, please contact Lynne Haynes at 314-821-5770 ext. 1018. To learn more about Reading2Connect check out their website here.
