Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a pioneer? Twelve year-old Terpsichore Johnson thinks it would be a grand adventure. And that is a good thing because her family is moving to Alaska to a farm settlement as part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. Settling farms and creating a town out of a wilderness is hard work but Terpsichore makes new friends and discovers she loves Alaska. Her mother, however, does not and longs to move back to their old home in Wisconsin until Terpsichore hatches a plan that she hopes will keep her family in Alaska. Terpsichore, an avid reader, makes references to Laura Ingalls Wilder and anyone who has enjoyed the Little House on the Prairie series may want to give this a try.
