Deaf Culture and people who identify as Deaf see their Deafness as something of major importance to their identity and are very proud of their Deafness. Deaf people also have to deal with a constant pressure to assimilate into the hearing world. With the creation and popularity of the cochlear implant, many Deaf people feel that it potentially threatens their language and the survival of their culture, as it implies a need for Deafness to be “fixed.” This presentation will explore both sides of the argument, with a focus on the importance of living in a world that incorporates both Deaf culture and the hearing world.
