Lorenzo F. Gonzalez lives in University City, but was born in Cuba. To Return to Cuba is his riveting autobiography beginning on the first day of the Cuban Revolution in 1959. The book traces his evolution from a teenage revolutionary through his college years in Hungary, featuring a rare historical perspective and first hand description of the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis through his experiences as a Cuban revolutionary soldier–information completely suppressed by the Cuban government. While studying in Hungary in 1970, he became disillusioned with communism and realized his only chance to control his future was to attempt a dangerous, and potentially fatal, escape to freedom. Attendees at the library program will hear about Lorenzo’s life story as it played out against the backdrop of major historical events in Cuba, the US, and Eastern Europe during the Cold War. Books will be available for sale and signing at the event.
