Grant Funded Technology – 2023, Part II

By Nick  |  Uncategorized

Every year the Kirkwood Public Library receives funding through many different grants to enhance library programs and services. The items below are from a second technology related grants that we were awarded in 2023.

We love spotting play at the library! Exploration for imaginative & social play abound at stations like our early literacy iPad stations. Thanks to a grant from IMLS through the MO State Library we now offer tween iPad stations for youth ages 10-12 to explore! With educational and fun apps chosen by KPL librarians there are pages of educational and creative games available to encourage play and create positive screen time options.

When you visit the library there are ample choices for items to check out and use. But how to you find what you are looking for? While our friendly librarians are more than happy to help, we also have several card catalog computers throughout the building for those who wish to search for materials on their own. Thanks to this recent grant from IMLS through the MO State Library, we now have new card catalog computers powered by ChromeOS devices.

We have two primary scanning stations at the library. One is particularly good for scanning old slides, while the other covers just about everything else. While the later can scan documents, photos and more, it is not intended for scanning books or items over an A3 size (11.7 x 16.5 inches). Books themselves need a special scanner that allows the book to lay open without having the stretch the spine to flatten the pages. And large documents typically need to be folded, scanned separately and pieced together using computer software. To supplement this need, we now circulate a large format scanner, capable of scanning books and up to A2 size (16.5 x 23.4 inches) items.

This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the LSTA as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
